Boys Tennis Win Singles League Champion, Doubles League Champion, and Sea View League Title.

Well…this was an interesting week for Capo Boys Tennis. On Tuesday, Dillon Han, Jace Motakef, Dylan Chen, Kaden Tabone, and Darian Irvani all advanced to the semifinals for the Sea View League Individual Championships.

On Wednesday, Darian Irvani was crowned the Sea View League Singles Champion after gutting out a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 finals match that lasted over 2 hours! CONGRATULATIONS, Darian! Not to be outdone, the combination of Dillon Han and Jace Motakef avenged their semifinal exit last year in a 6-2, 7-5 win to secure the 2023 Sea View League Doubles Championship. CONGRATULATIONS, Dillon and Jace!

It doesn’t stop there. Thursday presented another harrowing challenge for the Cougars as they were up against Trabuco Hills one last time (after splitting their first two matches) to determine the Sea View League Boys Champions. After a slow start where Capo found themselves in 2-4 deficit, singles were able to get a clean sweep, going 3-0 to keep the boys’ chances alive going into the third and final round with a match score of 5-7. After three quick and dominant wins by Darian (6-2), Dillon (6-0), and the newly formed combination of Zach/John (6-1), the Cougars were able to even the score to 8-8 with the match coming to its conclusion. Unfortunately, the curtain seemed ready to close on the Cougars’ Sea View League title hopes. Doubles 1 fell into a 2-5 hole and was one game away from a loss, and Singles 3 was at 1-4 and struggling against Trabuco’s Number 1. Fortunately, Cougars don’t quit. Firing off 5 straight games in a massive comeback, the combination of Jace/Ryan closed out their set 7-5 and were able to force the match into a 9-9 do-or-die tiebreaker with the chance for their first league title in 20 years at stake.

The Tiebreakers: Although they were near comatose during the match, the Cougars roared back to life in extra play. Led by the cheers of senior Zach Borazjani, the team echoed his cries of “Let’s go Capo!” and began cheering for one another as if they were in a college match. After Jace/Ryan took the first tiebreaker, they were immediately followed by Dylan/Kaden winning theirs in furious fashion. With two wins secured and with momentum now clearly favoring the Cougars, Darian got the third tiebreaker, and Sevitha took the fourth, eventually leading Capo to a 4-2 win and securing the team’s FIRST EVER Sea View League Championship! Congratulations Boys Tennis!!! And a special shout-out to Darian (3-0) and Dillon (3-0) for both sweeping and keeping our boys alive in today’s match. It was truly a team effort, with everyone on the team contributing to the win.

JV was also finally able to get revenge for their two losses against Trabuco Hills, going 12-6 in an amazing victory to end the season.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, concludes league play. Wish our boys luck as they prepare for CIF on Tuesday or Wednesday, and CIF individuals in late May.
